Hot Computer Science Degree Programs

Well the good news is that just about every computer science degree field is really hot right now, the bad news is that there are a ton of great choices in computer science careers. One thing that is continuously misunderstood about computer science is that the field is more specialized than most people realize. A hardware engineer many times cannot just whip up a computer program in java or any other hot computer programming language (ruby, php, c#, etc.). That’s not saying that there are not a few information technology super heros out there but generally one person cannot “do it all” like most people assume. In addition, while consider computer science schools you need to think about the specializations that each school offers and match those up with your career goals. Here are just a few of the really hot degree areas:

Web development. Okay, this should be a given. Just like you are on this website reading about all of your great options… Almost every business nowadays has a website and is working on their website continuously. In order to have a great website it helps to have someone that is well trained in web development especially in the proper architecture of web applications. There is a good way and a bad way to design web applications. In general the more flexibility you can provide in terms of presentation layer the better (internet marketing whiz’s always want to change the look and feel of the website). There are several great online colleges with strong web development programs to choose from.

Information technology. This is a well rounded IT degree that will get you as close as possible to being that “jack of all trades” that most people think of when they thing of a “computer guy.” Generally, you will learn everything from computer programming languages to management of information systems in information technology degree programs. This really prepares you for many different jobs in technology from system administrator all the way up through IT Management (although many managers will also have a master’s degree in information technology or a related field).

Database administration. Without a great database, most companies would be completely lost. Databases are used to keep track of inventory, customer information, and even the finances of the business. Few businesses can function more than a couple of hours if there databases go down. So whether you are learning about good database design or the nitty gritty specifics of database optimization and maintenance, an online degree in database administration will always be in really high demand. Additional things to consider is picking up certifications in Oracle database administration or MySQL database administration (both red hot in this field).

Networking. Another area of computer science that is largely taken for granted is how computers are all connected together to form an intranet or on a broader scale the internet. It’s actually a lot more complicated than most people realize and that is why experts in networking are paid so well and are extremely valuable to any organization. It’s also a great idea to investigate Cisco certifications if you are planning on becoming a networking star.

There are several other really challenging and fun areas of study in information technology but we decided to just focus on the really hot one’s above. In any event, it’s pretty easy to see that computer science is a deep area of study with a lot of specializations. It’s always a good idea to consider what you want to specialize in before choosing your computer science college.
